Realme has done a great job of keeping us on our toes since it first debuted in India in mid-2018 as a subsidiary of Oppo. The new Realme 5 (review) and Realme 5 Pro make Realme 3 (review) and Realme 3 Pro (review) successful - number 4 is considered inauspicious in some Asian cultures - highlighting the young company's remarkable turnaround rate. Four generations of a product has a lot to offer for a brand that is barely fifteen months old. Realme has managed to keep or replace the market leaders of Xiaomi, Lenovo, Honor, Asus, and Samsung by releasing new models every time they arise.

Realme 5 Pro is priced to compete with Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 Pro (review) and Mi A3 (review), various members of the Samsung M and A series, and the new Vivo Z1 Pro (review), and many older models. Price reductions are obtained. We have the top-end variant of Realme 5 Pro, which is priced similar to Realme X (Review). This should be an interesting review, so let's start.

Realme 5 Pro Design
For low-cost phones, Realme 5 Pro looks quite good to watch. It is not too big or heavy, and the material and finish feel premium. You will immediately notice the geometric pattern on the back, which has been used for less expensive phones like Realme 3i (Review) and Realme C2 (Review) till now. The concept is extended here, with a metallic luster and a completely smooth finish.

The rear abstraction shape has slightly different colors and captures light differently, but the device has an integrated shield at the back. You can choose between a crystal green and a sparkling blue finish, and we've liked the crystal-green review unit's blue-green jewel-toned look that stands apart without garnishing.

Thankfully, this phone has not slipped at all. Despite its shiny look, the Realme 5 Pro is very easy to get hold of. The rounded sides and curved back panels fit it comfortably in the palm, making it 8.9 mm thick. It weighs 184g and is actually more compact than Realme 5. We had no problem using it with one hand.

There is a large 6.3-inch LCD screen on the front, and Realme boasts a 90.6 screen-to-body ratio. The chin is quite prominent, but the rest of the borders look narrow and modern. We don't usually like pre-applied screen guards like a Realme 5 Pro, but some people prefer them for protection.

The Realme has gone with the Waterdrop Notch for the front camera, which we believe is fine at this stage - popup cameras and pierced screens are becoming more common but if you want that kind of design then you have to spend more Will have to.

The power and volume buttons are on the opposite side of the phone, and all are within easy reach. On the left side, you will find a tray with separate slots for two nano-SIMs and a microSD card. There is a USB Type-C port at the bottom, which is interesting because Realme 5 (Review) has a Micro-USB port. There is also a 3.5mm audio socket and a single speaker at the bottom of this phone.

One minor negative point about the design of Realme 5 Pro is the raised camera module on the rear which is quite prominent and also has a slightly thicker ring around it. You get four rear cameras, which is the biggest selling point of this phone. There is also a fingerprint sensor on the rear instead of embedded on the screen, like you will find some other phones at this price level.

Realme 5 Pro specifications and software
We first saw the Qualcomm Snapdragon 712 SoC in the value-packed Vivo Z1 Pro (review), and it also makes an appearance here. This chip has a slight edge over the Snapdragon 710 and Snapdragon 660, which are commonly found in phones in this segment. It has two Kryo 360 Gold cores running at 2.3GHz and six Kryo 360 Silver cores running at 1.7GHz for power efficiency, along with Adreno 616 graphics.

You get Realme 5 Pro with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage for Rs. 13,999; For the same 64GB storage with 6GB RAM, Rs. 14,999; Or 8 GB RAM and 128 GB storage for Rs. 16,999 which is a big jump. The latter variant is priced like the Realme X with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, which creates little conflict within the company's portfolio.

The 6.3-inch screen has a full-HD + resolution of 1080x2340. There is a 4035mAH battery, and uses VOOC Quick Charge technology owned by Realme Oppo. You get a big 20W charger in the box with this phone. There is also Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5 and GPS, but no FM radio. All common sensors including gyroscopes are included.

Realme also uses Oppo's ColorOS UI on top of Android. ColorOS 6 has been adapted here and there with a slightly more modern-looking icon and some other visual tweaks. The UI has an app drawer so that all icons are not dragged around the home screen. To the left of the first home screen is a smart assistant page with a panel for weather, calendar appointments, step tracking, and many other things you can show or hide. You can get sports scores, get orders from online shops, and keep track of upcoming flights.

There are loads of preinstalled apps ranging from Realme's own community and store apps to popular Amazon Shopping, UC Browser, Paytm, Helo, Facebook, and many more. Game centers, hot games, hot apps, and theme stores all try to provide you with content to download. Many of these can be uninstalled but system-level also cannot be disabled.

Thankfully we did not have to deal with frequent popup notifications and ad spam. After the initial setup there were some hints to use some applications and features, but very little after that. Talking about the setup process, we were prompted to download some promotional applications, but this step can be skipped.

Fingerprints and facial recognition can be used not only to unlock the phone, but also personal apps and a personal vault that allows you to keep documents and photos away from stinging eyes. ColorOS also tries to supply you with dummy data that includes call history and messages when invasive apps ask for too many permissions.

Customization options include icon density, UI animation speed, themes, and various gestures on the home screen. You can long press the phone's power button to call Google Assistant, and launch the application with gestures on the screen while the phone is in standby. Standard Android navigation buttons can be replaced with a variety of gesture schemes and some of these sets also have customization options.

Overall, both the software and usage experience of Realme 5 Pro are quite polished. We like the direction that Realme has taken. Our unit was running the July 2019 security patch.
